What is Enlarged prostate (BPH)?

The prostate is a small gland in men that surrounds the urinary passage. As men age, the prostate often enlarges (a condition called BPH), which can press on the urinary passage and cause a weak stream, difficulty starting, dribbling and frequent night-time urination. Most prostate enlargement is not cancer, but because the symptoms overlap with other conditions, an evaluation is important to confirm the cause and choose the right treatment.

How Doctors Evaluate Enlarged prostate (BPH)

Your consultation may include: a history of your urinary symptoms, examination including a prostate check, urine test, ultrasound to assess the prostate and bladder emptying, and blood tests when appropriate. This confirms the cause and guides whether lifestyle measures, medication or a procedure is best.
