What is Liver disease and jaundice?

The liver is a vital organ that processes nutrients, filters the blood and helps digestion. When it is affected — by fatty liver, viral hepatitis, alcohol, a blockage or other causes — it may not show symptoms at first, or it may cause jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin), fatigue, poor appetite or upper-right abdominal discomfort. Jaundice in particular always needs evaluation. Many liver conditions, especially fatty liver, are very manageable when found early, which is why prompt assessment matters.

  • Vomiting blood, or black, tarry stools

How Doctors Evaluate Liver disease and jaundice

Your consultation may include: a history of symptoms, lifestyle and medicines, examination, blood tests for liver function, viral hepatitis testing when relevant, and an ultrasound of the abdomen. This identifies the cause and guides treatment, which for many liver conditions is highly effective when started early.
