What is Skin allergy and rashes?

A rash is any change in the skin's colour, texture or feel — often red, itchy, bumpy or scaly. Allergic skin reactions happen when the skin reacts to something it touches, eats or is exposed to, while conditions like eczema and hives have their own patterns. In a humid climate, heat and sweat can also trigger rashes. Because the triggers vary so widely, identifying the cause is the key to lasting relief rather than relying on repeated creams.

Common Causes

Contact Reactions

  • • Rash where skin touched a product, metal or chemical
  • • Itching
  • • Redness

  • • Dry, itchy, scaly patches
  • • Recurring
  • • Often in skin folds

Hives (Urticaria)

  • • Raised, itchy welts that come and go
  • • Can be triggered by food, medicine or infection

  • • Prickly, itchy rash in sweaty areas
  • • Worse in hot weather

How Doctors Evaluate Skin allergy and rashes

Your consultation may include: a close look at the rash and its pattern, a history of triggers, products, food and medicines, and allergy or patch testing, or blood tests, when needed. Finding the trigger is what allows the rash to be controlled and prevented.
