What is Fungal skin infection (Tinea / ringworm)?

Fungal skin infections happen when fungi grow on warm, moist areas of skin, causing itchy, red, often ring-shaped patches (commonly called ringworm). They are very common in humid climates and in skin folds, the groin and feet. They spread easily and often come back when treatment is stopped too early or the wrong cream is used. A dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis, prescribe the correct treatment for the full course, and advise on preventing recurrence.

Common Causes

Body Ringworm

  • • Itchy, red, ring-shaped patches with a clearer centre
  • • Spreads outward

Groin & Skin Fold Infection

  • • Itching and redness in warm, moist folds
  • • Common in humid weather

Foot Infection (Athlete's Foot)

  • • Itching, peeling between toes
  • • Worse with sweat and closed shoes

Recurring / Resistant Infection

  • • Keeps returning
  • • Often from stopping treatment early or wrong creams

Symptoms That Should Not Be Ignored

  • An infection that is spreading or keeps returning
  • Intense itching disturbing daily life or sleep
  • Ring-shaped patches on the body
  • Infection in the groin, skin folds or feet
  • An infection not clearing with over-the-counter creams
  • Redness, oozing or worsening despite treatment

How Doctors Evaluate Fungal skin infection (Tinea / ringworm)

Your consultation may include: examination of the rash pattern and location, a history of itching, spread, sweating and previous creams used, and a simple skin scraping test when needed. This confirms the diagnosis and ensures the right treatment for the correct duration — which is the key to clearing it fully.
