What is Dandruff and scalp conditions?

Dandruff is flaking of the scalp, often with itching. While mild dandruff is very common, persistent or severe flaking is frequently due to seborrheic dermatitis — a treatable scalp condition linked to oil and a harmless scalp yeast — or sometimes dryness or fungal overgrowth. A scalp that is red, very itchy, crusted or flaking heavily, especially with hair fall, is worth a dermatologist's review, because the right treatment clears it far better than switching shampoos.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

  • • Greasy yellowish flakes
  • • Redness
  • • Itching
  • • Affects scalp, eyebrows, sides of nose

Dry Scalp

  • • Small dry flakes
  • • Tightness
  • • Worse in dry conditions

Fungal Overgrowth

  • • Persistent itching and flaking
  • • May need antifungal treatment

How Doctors Evaluate Dandruff and scalp conditions

Your consultation may include: a close examination of the scalp and flaking pattern, a history of products, hair care and symptoms, and a closer scalp check or test when a fungal or other cause is suspected. This identifies the exact scalp condition so treatment is targeted.
