What is Wheezing?
Wheezing is a high-pitched, whistling sound that happens when air moves through narrowed or irritated airways, usually heard when breathing out. It is most often linked to asthma or allergies, but can also occur with chest infections, COPD or airway irritation from dust and smoke. While occasional mild wheezing can settle, recurring or worsening wheezing should be evaluated, because identifying the cause allows treatment that opens the airways and keeps breathing comfortable.

How Doctors Evaluate Wheezing
Your consultation may include: a history of when the wheezing occurs and its triggers, chest examination, oxygen level check, lung function testing (spirometry) when needed, and a chest X-ray when relevant. This identifies whether asthma, allergy, infection or another cause is responsible.
